The City of Durango is acting on organics
Hundreds of comments poured into the Durango City Council about reducing food waste — and it worked. On January 7, 2025 the City unanimously passed Resolution 2025-004, directing staff to research organic waste ordinances, run pilot programs, and form a citizen focus group.
Ideas on the table include food waste drop-off locations, service rebates for low-income households, support for commercial composting through sustainable tourism funding, and a pilot “Pay as You Throw” program. Since December 2026, the City has partnered with Colorado Circular Communities’ STEPS program to develop recommended ordinance elements for residential curbside organics recycling.
La Plata Healthy Soils Program
Led by The Good Food Collective, Table to Farm Compost and Local First Foundation, this program funds regenerative agriculture in La Plata County through voluntary 1% donations at participating restaurants and food businesses — supporting cover cropping, composting and other climate-beneficial soil practices.
We are recruiting 20 participating businesses in 2026 and 50 by the end of 2027, with a goal of raising $1M for farm grants. It is a cornerstone of the 2025–2030 La Plata County Food Systems Plan.
